Culinary Tour of Gifu (Updated 7/22/2017)


DAY 1: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13. 2017

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

  1. Ukai Boat Ride: Cormorant birds fishing

  2. Ayu Dinner at Cormorant Birds' Master Home: Highly sought-after summer season river fish

  3. *New*Private Tour: Knife & Sword Master's Atelier and Knife Factory

 

  • 9:30 AM  Meet at the 3rd Floor of Meitetsu Bus Ticket Counter. [Detail Map Provided Separately]

  • 9:50 AM  Depart from Meitetsu Bus Terminal in Nagoya Station. [70 to 80-minute bus ride to Seki City, Gifu Prefecture.]

  • 11:10 AM Arrive in Seki.  Lunch at Sukeroku, a buckwheat noodle restaurant. 

  • 12:30 PM *New*Private Walking Tour:  [About 2 miles walking in total]
    • Seki Sword Museum & Knife Shop
    • Hattori Hamono & Fujitake Hamono
    • Sword Master's Atelier
  • 3:30 PM 10-minute taxi ride to our accommodation/Isaji Residence. [Hereafter referred to as "Residence"]  

  • 4:30 PM Leave for Adachi Commorant birds fishing master's Residence by taxi. [About a 15-minute taxi ride] Adachi Family live with cormorant birds and we can see how they take care of birds. The dinner starts shortly after 5 PM. This is the standard time for serving dinner as it's followed by the boat riding.

  • 6:30 PM Ukai Boat Riding: We'll spend some time on the boat. Please bring your jacket as it may get cold. Drinks and snacks will be served.

  • 8:30 PM Head back to the residence by taxi

 

DAY 2: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14. 2017

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:

  1. Japanese Market Tour & Cooking Party [for Lunch]

  2. *New* Mino Washi: Japanese Handmade Paper & Art Craft

  3. *New* Miso Katsu [Pork cutlet with miso sauce or Breaded Shrimp for Dinner] 

  • 8:00 AM Breakfast
  • 8:50 AM Leave for the local market [Less than a 15-minute walk, 1/2 mile.]

  • 10:00 AM 3-Hours Cooking and Dining Time 

  • 12:50 PM Leave for Mino by Local Train [Less than a 15-minute walk to train station. Train leaves at 13:10 and arrives at Mino station at 13:27]

  • 1:45 PM Mino Paper Lantern Museum & Traditional Marchant's Residence [Built in 18th C.]

  • 2:30 PM Free time in Mino Old town. What you can do:

  • 4:40 PM Head back to Seki. Meet at the designated meeting point. [Train leaves 16:58 @Umeyama station. ]

  • 6:00 PM Take a taxi to the locally renowned restaurant "Akikatsu" [Most likely we need to make a line as it's a popular restaurant and won't take any reservation. Pork cutlet with sweet miso sauce is worth the wait! For non-pork eater, breaded shrimp is the best choice. ]

  • 8:00 PM Head back to the residence. [15-minute taxi ride]

 

DAY 3: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15. 2017

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:

  1. Takayama old town & Morning Market

  2. Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage Village & Festival

  3. *New*Sushi Lunch (Hida Beef Sushi is included)

  • 7:15 AM Breakfast
  • 8:00 AM Leave for Takayama [About 2-hour bus ride. Small private bus for all day]

  • 10:00 AM Arrive Takayama Old Town & Morning Market

    • Known for centuries for having the best carpentry, Takayama hosts many furniture companies and artists in. Great shops to check out.

    • Takayama Food tour will be provided upon request. 

  • 12:30 PM  Sushi Lunch (Hida beef sushi is included.)

  • 1:45 PM Leavefor Shirakawago [About an hour mini-bus ride]

  • 3:30 PM Festival at Shirakawa Shrine

  • 4:00 PM Free time at old town district

  • 5:30 PM Leave Shirakawago

  • 7:30 PM Dinner at Nakamuraya (Chicken Specialty restaurant. Seafood option available.)

  • 9:00 PM Head back to the residence [10-15 minutes walk]

 

DAY 4: MONDAY, OCTOBER 16. 2017

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:

  1. Mino Pottery Barn & Oribe Street (Tajimi, Gifu)

  2. Inuyama Castle & Main Street (Inuyama, Aichi)

  3. Kaiseki Dinner (Gifu, Gifu)

 

  • 8:00 AM Breakfast  

  • 9:00 AM Leave for Tajimi[About 1-hour bus ride. Small private bus for all day]

  • 10:00 AM Arrive at Koubei Gama and Sakazuki (Sake Cups) Museum

  • 11:30 AM Leaving for Oribe Street where you can find antique to contemporary Japanese tableware stores. 

  • 12:00 PM Lunch at Sawasen [Grilled Eel/Unagi Hitsumabushi]

  • 1:00 PM  Oribe Street. [Free time: There are nice ceramic shops & Galleries, Antique tableware shops to Japanese sweet stores. Time flies when you discover your favorite store! ]

  • 2:30 PM Leave for Inuyama Castle (40 to 50-minute minivan ride)

  • 3:15 PM Arrive Inuyama Main street, where you can find many choices for snacks & sweets such as dango, soft served ice cream to shaved ice, and walk up to Inuyama Castle

  • 5:30 PM Leave for Gifu (About an hour bus ride)

  • 6:30 PM Dinner at Takada Hassho [ Kaiseki Dinner]

  • 8:30 PM Head back to the residence (About half an hour bus ride)

DAY 5: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17. 2017

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

  1. Cooking to make our farewell brunch!

  • 8:00 AM Start cooking (Menu TBD)

  • 10:00 AM Brunch

  • 11:00 AM Departure. We'll help you get to your next destination.
